# Create a Group

> Creates a group. `name` is the identifier you will address it by everywhere else — it is NOT a generated UUID, and it cannot be changed afterwards; `displayName` is the label people see and can be changed at any time.

A new group is empty and grants nothing. Add people with `POST /v1/groups/{id}/users` and grant it roles with `POST /v1/roles/{id}/groups`; until both happen the group has no effect on anyone's access.

Failures:
- `400` — a required member is missing.
- `409` — a group with that `name` already exists in your organization.
- `503 IDE-0066` — the identity provider is unavailable (unreachable, too slow to answer, or failing). Nothing about the request was wrong; retry it later.
