# Delete a Role

> Removes a role permanently, and with it every grant of that role — to groups and to people alike. Nobody is deleted, but everyone who held access ONLY through this role loses it without a per-holder confirmation.

On success the response has no body (204).

Failures:
- `404` — no such role in your organization.
- `422 IDE-1061` — the role is reserved for machine credentials; the service that declared it removes it.
- `503 IDE-0066` — the identity provider is unavailable (unreachable, too slow to answer, or failing). Nothing about the request was wrong; retry it later.
